Fightback goes unrewarded for López in Austria

Alonso López made a great fightback in the Moto3 race at the Austrian Grand Prix. Starting from pitlane due to a penalty, the Repsol rider set a great pace from the opening stages of the race, and was up into the points after just eight laps.

After serving another penalty for exceeding the track limits with 6 laps remaining, Lopez fought hard on the final laps to finally take the chequered flag in 16th position.

Sergio García experienced bad luck, as he was also fighting for points when he went down at Turn 9 of Lap 11. The Repsol rider was able to rejoin the race and cross the finish line in 27th place.

The next World Championship event, the British GP, will take place on August 23rd, 24th and 25th at Silverstone.

2019 Moto3 Austrian GP – Rider statements

Alonso López

This race had everything happening. I started from pitlane, but from the opening lap I started to overtake other riders. Up to midway point I was riding with the same times as the frontrunners.

In the final stages, after a penalty for exceeding the track limits, I got into a fight with Öncü and found it harder to reach the front positions, since they greatly increased the pace. The positive thing is that I tried from beginning to end and that I set a good pace.

Today’s race was tough. We didn’t know if it was going to be dry or wet, nor what conditions the track was going to be in. In the end we put on slicks. Although there was a dry line, in some areas it was very narrow. I was having a very good race, climbing up the order and pushing, but I got off the dry line a bit and crashed.

In spite of everything, we will take away the positives; at the beginning of the race I was very comfortable, and after the crash I was able to get back on track and finish.
