Over the years, the MotoGP World Championship has visited a number of places throughout America. Whether it’s Laguna Seca, Austin, or Indianapolis, the Repsol Honda Team has always maintained a good relationship with the US. It is more active than ever after Marc’s 2018 victory in the Americas.

The first circuit that the Repsol Honda Team visited in the United States of America was Laguna Seca, in 2005. At that time, there was in fact an American rider on the team, namely, Nicky Hayden.

The Kentucky Kid used his knowledge of the track to get the pole position and victory in that GP.

The following year, the paddock repeated this visit and most of riders were then familiar with the circuit. However, Hayden again used the “home field advantage” to secure the victory. In addition, Dani Pedrosa finished second, giving the Repsol Honda Team a one-two finish.

Indianapolis joins the MotoGP World Championship

Two years later, in 2008, Indianapolis debuted on the world championship calendar. Hayden performed outstandingly the entire weekend by finishing in a well-earned second place.

The team continued racing strong on American soil in 2009, this time with Pedrosa. The Castellar del Vallés native got a pole position in Indianapolis and won after a magnificent race at Laguna Seca.

The pole position in the 2009 Indy was not enough for Dani, because the following season he returned to win the Grand Prix, demonstrating that he is particularly good on American tracks.

2011 was Casey Stoner’s year. The Australian rider took the top of the podium for himself in both Indianapolis as well as in Laguna Seca. He also had the fastest laps in both GPs, confirming that he was the rider who unequivocally dominated that season. Dani Pedrosa joined him on the podium on both occasions.

In 2012, the two Repsol riders split the victories. While Casey repeated at Laguna Seca, Dani had a spectacular “grand slam”—a pole position, the fastest lap, and the win—in Indianapolis, finishing ahead of second place Jorge Lorenzo by more than 10 seconds.

Marc Márquez, king of the US

2013 was the year of records broken by Marc Márquez, a year when he made his debut in the top class which has now been recorded in this sport’s history. In ’93 he won for the first time in a MotoGP, specifically in Austin, during the paddock’s first visit to the circuit of the Americas. Marc was the youngest rider with a win in the highest class. He did so with his teammate, Pedrosa, in second place.

That same year, the rider from Cervera also took a win (and the fastest lap) in his first visit to Laguna Seca being the youngest rider to win two consecutive races in MotoGP and finished off the American calendar with a pole position, a win, and a fastest lap in Indianapolis. Here Dani once again finished at his side on the podium.

In 2014 as well as in 2015, Marc returned to win both in Austin and Indianapolis, making it clear that he was the new “king” of American tracks on the world championship calendar. He won again in Austin on 2016 and 2017, establishing his domain.

With his 2018 victory in the circuit of the Americas, the Repsol riders reminded all MotoGP fans that, when stepping on American soil, they are the competitors to beat.
