Marc Marquez crowned 2019 MotoGP World Champion

Marc Márquez’ impressive world title haul reads at 6 MotoGP titles in 7 years; 8 in 10 seasons in all classes. The Spaniard became MotoGP World Champion once again this weekend, clinching the crown at the Thai Grand Prix. With four races remaining until end of the season, and for the fourth consecutive year, the Repsol Honda Team rider has added another honour to his long list of achievements in the sport.

In an almost perfect season, with the only blot on his copybook coming at the third race of the year, in Austin, Márquez has proven to be the most complete rider on the grid, adapting to all circuits and circumstances. Season after season, Márquez continues to break records and, still only 26 years old, is the youngest rider in history to win six titles in the premier class -and to win eight in the Motorcycle World Championship.

He joins the exclusive list of five riders that also includes Ubbiali (9), Hailwood (9), Rossi (9), Nieto (12 + 1) and Agostini (15), to have won at least eight World Championships in all categories. The list of riders with six or more premier class titles is even smaller, and Márquez surpasses Doohan to move third for such honours, behind Agostini (8) and Rossi (7).

Márquez came into the World Championship in 2008, and the Repsol rider dazzled onlookers by taking to the podium in what was only his sixth Grand Prix. His breakout year was 2010, in which he won his first title -in 125cc– and, after a brilliant spell in Moto2 where he also became World Champion in that class, his arrival at the Repsol Honda Team in MotoGP confirmed his status as one of the greatest talents not only in the history of motorcycle racing, but the world of sport as a whole.
