Marc Márquez has been crowned MotoGP World Champion for the fourth consecutive year, winning it with four races remaining. In Thailand he clinched his sixth MotoGP crown in seven seasons, adding to those obtained in 125cc in 2010 and Moto2 in 2012.
Aged 26 years and 231 days, Márquez is the youngest rider in history to win eight titles, and is behind only Ángel Nieto for the Spanish rider with most such honours (12+1). In addition, he is already the rider with the third most World Championships in the premier class, with six, overtaking fellow Repsol Honda Team legend Mick Doohan.
This season Márquez has shown great consistency, finishing first or second at all of the races he has completed. He took the lead of the series at the Spanish Grand Prix and held onto it through to his title win with four races still to be contested -an achievement with two precedents: In 1997 with Doohan and in 2005 with Valentino Rossi.
He has become the rider with the most pole positions in premier class history, surpassing the 58 taken by Doohan. In addition, he is the Spanish rider with the most victories in MotoGP, exceeding the figure of 47 wins by current teammate Jorge Lorenzo.
Since he won his first race in 2010, Márquez has claimed 79 victories, overtaking Mike Hailwood this season to move into fourth in the all-time list for most first places. He is the only man in the history of the sport to have won five or more races for ten seasons in a row.
