Arón Canet claimed his first victory at World Championship level, and his second podium. His previous rostrum finish was third place at the 2016 Australian Grand Prix.

The 25 points obtained at Jerez take the Spaniard to fifth in the overall standings.

Enea Bastianini finished 1.456s behind his teammate in a close end to the race.

The Italian rider, who started 14th on the grid, finished eighth.

This is the best gift I could give on Mother’s Day (in Spain). It was a very difficult race, because when I tried to move up to the front positions, other riders wouldn’t let me. At other Grands Prix I had found it a little hard to overtake, but today it wasn’t difficult for me to brake late and I did it just like my rivals. I decided to try it at the end of the race, sticking close to third place in order to make a move on the last corner. I did that and was able to win the race, so I can finally say that I like the Circuito de Jerez.

It was a positive race, because we started from quite far back and finished in the front group. It was a difficult weekend and, although the warmup was better, we knew that it would be difficult to fight back in the race. We started well and I managed to get into the first group, but it’s just a shame that, after the fifth lap, the performance of the front tyre dropped a lot. We are happy because I held on there and finished a second and a half off the winner, which is my best result at this circuit. I’ve always found things hard at Jerez.
