There was a fifth sprint victory of the season for ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia at Mandalika on Saturday. The Italian made a good start from P4 and, after Jorge Martín crashed out on Lap 1 when at the front of the race, he held onto the lead until the chequered flag. He reduced the gap in the overall standings by 12 points, and is now just 12 points behind.

Enea Bastianini made a late overtake to claim second place, whilst Marc Márquez, after making a great comeback that saw him move up seven positions in the early stages, completed the podium.

Behind them, Bezzecchi -who had been involved in a near miss with Bagnaia that took him out of the fight for the win, Marco Bezzecchi, Franco Morbidelli, Pedro Acosta, Maverick Viñales, Johann Zarco and Fabio Di Giannantonio all claimed points.

Tough sprint for Repsol Honda

The sprint race did not go as the Repsol Honda Team had hoped in Mandalika. Both Luca Marini and Joan Mir were hoping to fight for the Top 15 positions, but their feeling was not as good as in other sessions of the weekend.

Marini was fighting for 18th with Augusto Fernández until the end, finally achieving the position.

Mir took risks to move up the order and crashed out on the third lap, although he escaped unharmed from the incident.

The long race takes place on Sunday at 09.00h local time

Statements

Joan Mir

«A difficult day for us, a frustrating one. It’s a similar situation to Misano again where we can’t get the most out of the new tyre and there are still some vibrations. I fell at Turn 16 in the Sprint which is disappointing because we have a lot of potential. We need to work like we did in Misano to overcome this situation and put together another good Sunday because I know we have the pieces there. Tomorrow we get to try again.»

Luca Marini

«Not a perfect Saturday. Our level here overall is good, especially when you look at the other Hondas like Zarco. It shows that the bike is improving a lot which is very satisfying for me. From my side I made a couple of mistakes during Qualifying, and we couldn’t put together a really strong lap, but this can happen. In the race, our pace was very close to the rest of the riders. I got unlucky in the start of the race because Binder had some problem and we touched in Turn 8, which sent me to last. Our pace was good, and I think we can achieve more if we are strong from the start.»
