From karting to F1 and from there to win in GP2

Although it is almost unheard of for a F1 driver to change to a lower category, Giorgio was able to take advantage of the opportunity to win his trophies.

After winning nine championships and four second places in karting, he went on to drive in the German Formula 3, where he won in 2000.

In 2004 he managed to make the move to F1 but, after a poor season, he changed to the recently created GP2. This is where he stood out, and in 2008, with the Repsol team, he won the World Championship.

Racing Engineering Team

A team with a clear goal

I chose to join the Racing Engineering team because the offer they made me included a great opportunity to form part of a serious team that were clear about what they wanted: to win

After his first win of the season

We knew what we had to do and we won. So everything was perfect. I am very pleased with everything as we understood what we had to improve in the car, that makes me very, very happy

GP2 Champion

I am overjoyed, because I really wanted to win this championship. It was my last opportunity to demonstrate that I was capable of doing so. It has been a great year, I've enjoyed my battles against Romain [Grosjean], Bruno [Senna] and the others. We had some great races, in which my best moment was, without a doubt, at Silverstone. It has been a great season for me and my team

The look in the victory

After a brilliant career in karting, where he won several Italian, European and even one World championship, Giorgio Pantano became one of the most promising drivers in Italian racing.

In 2000, he went on to compete in the German F3000 which he won, and before long he was testing for different F1 teams.

His skills served to gain him a place in the International F3000, where he drove for three years, until in 2004 the Jordan team offered him the opportunity to make his début in F1. His move to the team coincided with the decline of the British team. So, in 2005 he decided to take his chance in the recently-created GP2 Series.

After several years of winning pole positions, victories, and podiums, in 2008 the Italian driver joined the Racing Engineering team with Repsol with a clear goal: to win. The hard work over the winter served to confirm those expectations, the Repsol pilot added a new triumph to his achievements: Champion of the GP2 Series 2008.
